Emergency Preparedness at UPEI

UPEI is committed to creating a safe and healthy living, learning, and working environment. The health and safety of our students, employees, and other campus users are the highest priority. 

How do I report an emergency?

Call 911 (or 9-911 from an internal campus phone).

How will I find out about an emergency?

Depending on the nature of the emergency, the following communications methods will be used:

  • Notices will be posted in red on the UPEI website.
  • In a Level 3 emergency, the website will be overridden by an emergency website.
  • Messages will be recorded on the Campus Closures/Alert Line at (902) 894-2882
  • E-mails will be sent to faculty, staff, and students
  • Announcements will be made on local radio stations
  • Emergency notices will be posted on buildings


How is UPEI preparing for emergencies?

UPEI has developed an Emergency Management Plan that is regularly updated. It includes plans and procedures to protect people, facilities, and animals.

Who is in charge of emergency management?

The Emergency Management Co-ordinator is the V.P. of Finance & Facilities. There are three emergency operational groups: the Senior Management Group, the Emergency Operations Team, and the Emergency On-Site Team.

Who is in charge of emergency communications?

The Integrated Communications office, directed by the Emergency Management Co-ordinator, is responsible for all emergency communications. As part of its Emergency Management Plan, the University has identified a Media Relations and Communications Team.
